    In short

    • The ticket for the Galata Maritime Museum includes the visit to the Nazario Sauro submarine, moored in front of the museum. There is no separate ticket for the submarine.
    • Count about 2 hours for the museum and about 20 minutes for the submarine. From March to October the museum is open every day from 10:00 to 19:00. In winter the hours are shorter, and the museum is closed on Mondays in November, January and February.
    • The submarine has narrow ladders and hatches. Children under 4 cannot go in, a helmet is compulsory and you get it at the ticket office, and the visit is not suitable if you have trouble walking, suffer from claustrophobia or wear thin heels.
    • Short on time? Choose the Galata ticket with the submarine. Spending the day on the Porto Antico? Choose the combined ticket with the Aquarium.

    Genoa in 1481, and Columbus

The ground floor opens with a view of Genoa painted in 1481 by Cristoforo Grassi, and a portrait of Christopher Columbus by Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio from the middle of the sixteenth century. It is a good place to see how the city looked when its sailors ruled the sea.

A galley you can walk on

On the first floor you step onto the deck of a galley, a long oared ship of the kind Genoa sent to sea. Nearby there are silver chests, globes and atlases.

    Emigration: boarding a steamer

The third floor tells the story of the Italians who emigrated. You walk through reconstructions and onto the deck of a steamship, and you can try a ship simulator before you go down to the submarine.

The Mirador terrace: 360 degrees over the port

On the top floor, a terrace with a Mediterranean garden gives you a view over the old town and the curve of the port. The same floor has a collection of marine paintings and a path about the liner Andrea Doria, which sank in 1956.
